Sumar distances itself: demands transparency and housing solutions

The Sumar coalition asserts itself as the 'clean left' and pressures the PSOE to resume urgent measures against the rental crisis and corruption.

Sumar's challenge in the face of the PSOE's crisis of integrity

In a context marked by political instability and a constant drip of judicial investigations affecting the Socialist Party, the groups that make up the Sumar coalition have raised their voices. During a recent event held in Barcelona, ministers and leaders from Comuns, Más Madrid, IU, and Movimiento Sumar pledged to reaffirm their identity as the "clean and brave left," distancing themselves from the turbulence currently affecting their majority partner in the Executive branch.

The tension is palpable. While Pedro Sánchez's government faces external pressure to call for elections, Sumar has opted for a strategy of internal demands, calling for integrity and transparency as non-negotiable conditions for maintaining the stability of the coalition.

Housing as the priority axis of the progressive agenda

Beyond political ethics, the absolute priority for the group is the social agenda. The Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy, was blunt in setting the path: "housing, housing, and housing." Given the inability to make progress in Congress due to opposition blocking, Sumar has announced that it will re-register the decree for the extension of rental contracts that was struck down in April by the PP, Vox, and Junts.

The situation is critical for thousands of citizens who see how access to a decent home becomes more difficult every day. As we analyzed in our article on the rental crisis: how the price of housing makes us poorer, the pressure on households is not limited to monthly payments, but also conditions the future of an entire generation.

Measures against speculation

Minister of Health Mónica García emphasized that the party will not falter in its efforts to protect tenants against "rentiers and speculators." Key proposals include:

  • Immediate reactivation of the rental decree blocked in Congress.
  • Greater control over housing prices to prevent abuse.
  • Policies that move away from traditional market logic, prioritizing the constitutional right to a home over real estate profitability.

"We will not stop until rentals are extended and we kick out the rentiers and speculators," Mónica García declared during her speech.

A burden on the progressive majority?

Sumar's self-perception is clear: they see themselves as the engine driving real progressive policies within the Government. Leaders like Ernest Urtasun have been explicit in pointing out that the PSOE headquarters on Ferraz Street cannot become a "burden" for the left-wing agenda. For his part, Antonio Maíllo (IU) has stressed that the only way for the Executive to overcome this stage is through full accountability regarding the corruption cases hovering over the Socialists.

Although the PSOE defends itself by claiming an orchestrated "demolition operation," the parliamentary reality is complex. With key figures appearing on the judicial horizon, the coalition government faces a trial by fire where transparency and the ability to legislate on housing will determine if the legislature manages to weather the storm or if, conversely, the fracture between partners becomes irreparable.
