May 1st: The housing crisis and wages set the social agenda
Thousands of citizens demonstrate in Málaga, demanding urgent measures against the housing crisis and better wage conditions ahead of an election year.

A May Day with an electoral echo in Andalusia
Málaga became the epicenter of union demands this year for the May 1st holiday. Thousands of people marched through the city center under a clear slogan: "National priority: wages and housing." The choice of the Málaga capital was no coincidence; the city symbolizes, like few others, the tension between tourism-driven growth and the precariousness of its working class.
The event was attended by union leaders Unai Sordo (CCOO) and Pepe Álvarez (UGT), as well as members of the central government and candidates for the Regional Government of Andalusia. The day, marked by a spirit of protest, highlighted how the uncontrolled rise in the cost of living is eroding the purchasing power of families.
The housing emergency as the focus of the protest
The rental crisis and the difficulty of obtaining a mortgage were the dominant themes. While purchase prices have soared by 80% and rental prices by 70% over the last five years, unions have denounced that the real estate market has ceased to be a right and has become a rent-extraction mechanism.
"It is a disgrace that Congress prevents people with a lease from being able to remain in their homes," lamented Pepe Álvarez during his speech.
Analysis of the situation suggests that, in many cases, families allocate up to 50% of their income just to keep a roof over their heads. As we have analyzed in Perder la centralidad: el PP ignora la crisis de vivienda y alquiler, this issue is not only economic but a major political challenge that is mobilizing citizens ahead of key upcoming elections.
Wages versus corporate profits
In addition to housing, the gap between the growth of corporate profits—which have risen by 13%—and the real wages of workers was another hot topic. Union leaders demanded:
- Strict compliance with the SMI (Interprofessional Minimum Wage).
- Urgent renegotiation of collective bargaining agreements.
- Effective measures against real estate speculation and the excessive tourist use of residential properties.
Conclusion: a push for the social model
The demonstration in Málaga made it clear that social discontent remains latent. Despite agreements reached in previous years, job insecurity and the impossibility of finding a decent home are factors that define the current political landscape. The union mobilization now seeks to pressure public policies, both regional and national, to stop prioritizing market interests and focus, once and for all, on guaranteeing the basic rights of the social majority.
